AI applications cover many areas. However, before investigating them and understanding which are the main AI applications, it is good to be clear about the concept of artificial intelligence.
Underlying AI is the idea that it is possible to create machines that are able to learn and think independently. In the field of computer science, AI is in fact a field of research that tries to emulate certain capabilities typical of human beings, like adaptation and planning.

AI THEORIES
AI applications are based on two theories: strong AI and weak AI.
- Strong AI: machines manage to develop a consciousness, on a par with humans or other intelligent beings.
- Weak AI: machines are able to solve complex problems, but never develop self-awareness.
The strong AI theory has given rise to many science fiction movies, which see it more as a threat than an opportunity. Yet, to date, the computational algorithms used by AI applications offer significant advantages, both in the home and business environments. Let’s discover them.
Advantages AI applications
The potential of AI applications is very high; today, within Italian companies and the public administration, their implementation offers countless advantages in terms of efficiency and effectiveness of processes.
Their pervasiveness guarantees:
- innovative technological solutions;
- added value for companies that decide to adopt them;
- a reduction in the costs involved in the realisation of products and services.
Six areas of application
The Artificial Intelligence Observatory, thanks to research involving a sample of 721 companies from Italy and other countries, was able to classify six areas of AI application, subdivided by purpose.
Chatbots
This is the case, for example, of ChatGPT, a well-known software, developed by OpenAI, whose purpose is to simulate a conversation with another human being. These software solutions are increasingly used in corporate customer care, as the first level of H24 assistance. Used in marketing, research and development (R&D) and HR management, they are characterised by their ability, when confronted with a user’s query, to quickly gather information, understand the tone and respond precisely.
Intelligent data processing (IDP)
These are algorithms that, starting from the analysis of structured and unstructured data, extract information useful for predictive analysis (forecasts on the trend of a given phenomenon) or for fraud detection. Most often, these are solutions for Forecasting and Classification & Clustering activities.
Natural language processing (NLP)
Natural language processing (NLP) is that branch of AI that processes natural language (extrapolating it from web pages, posts, tweets, corporate information, etc.) to facilitate human-machine interaction. It is used, not infrequently, to translate and produce texts from data.
Computer vision
It is that interdisciplinary field of AI that, thanks to machine learning (ML), enables computers to high level analysis of images or videos. The purposes can be: the recognition of people, animals and things, the biometric recognition of certain body parts (face or iris) and the extrapolation of information to detect anomalies or dangers in the case, for example, of video surveillance.
Recommendation system
Recommender systems form the basis of social platforms (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, etc.) and e-commerce sites (Amazon, eBay, Netflix, Apple Music, etc.) because, thanks to sophisticated algorithms, they track users’ actions and suggest services and products to them that are in target with the customer journey, providing a personalised shopping experience.
Physical solutions
It is possible to divide physical artificial intelligence solutions into three categories:
- autonomous vehicles;
- robots
- intelligent objects.
Autonomous vehicles
They are self-driving vehicles used to transport people, animals or things by road, sea or air, capable of performing actions and making decisions without the help of humans. They are governed by an AI whose task is to analyse the surrounding environment.
Robots
Here we are dealing with robots, not necessarily humanoids, capable of moving and performing actions without human intervention. These are machines intended for the industrial sector for the automation of production and logistics processes and for the civil market as sales assistants.
Intelligent object
People are quick to include them in the Internet of Things (IoT), when in reality smart objects (like a Bluetooth suitcase) do not obligatorily need an Internet connection, the important thing is that they have an AI that can make decisions and interface with the outside world.
Examples of AI applications in everyday life
The examples of AI applications that could be cited are numerous; here are five AI applications that you already use and are not aware of.
1. Virtual assistants
Siri, Alexa, Google Now and Cortana respond to voice commands to search keywords on the web, start playlists of songs, send text messages or answer calls. They are virtual assistants designed to understand natural language and to learn, over time, the tastes and habits of their interlocutors.
2. Videosurveillance
Images from videosurveillance systems in ports, airports, stations, shopping centres and public places are processed and examined in real time by powerful AI applications in order to detect possible threats or dangers.
3. Videogames
In videogames, particularly in first person shooters (FPS) and adventure games, extensive use is made of AI. The characters, the environment and even the story evolve following logics dictated by artificial intelligence algorithms.
4. Home automation
A home automation system, thanks to AI, makes it possible to manage smart devices in the home remotely and with a considerable saving in utility bills. AI home automation applications, in fact, increase performance with lower consumption and represent the perfect combination of comfort and energy efficiency.
5. Smart cars
So-called next-gen smart cars keep an eye on traffic, anticipate braking in case of danger, and the most advanced, such as Tesla branded cars, also possess autopilot. To do all this they use AI applications that can learn and change their behaviour with experience.
