What is predictive analytics?

Predictive analytics is a set of data analysis techniques that leverage statistical models and machine learning algorithms to anticipate future events. This technology helps identify trends, correlations, and hidden patterns within large datasets, allowing for more informed and strategic decision-making. With the increasing availability of data and continuously evolving computational power, predictive analytics is now widely used across numerous sectors, including healthcare, finance, logistics, and cybersecurity.

A key component of this field is its integration with deep learning and artificial neural networks, enabling the analysis of complex data—such as images, text, and video streams—to generate even more accurate and detailed predictions.

Why AI plays a crucial role

Artificial intelligence is transforming predictive analytics by processing and extracting insights from vast amounts of data at unprecedented speeds. Through advanced machine learning and deep learning techniques, AI can analyze complex patterns and generate increasingly precise forecasts.

One of the most innovative aspects of AI-driven predictive analytics is its ability to adapt and learn over time. Machine learning algorithms continuously improve their performance by analyzing new data, reducing errors, and enhancing predictive accuracy.

The synergy between AI and predictive analytics is particularly evident in sectors like healthcare, where AI can detect diseases early by analyzing medical images, and public safety, where predictive technologies can identify crime patterns and help prevent incidents before they occur.

How predictive analytics is driving European projects

Predictive analytics has been successfully applied in various European projects, demonstrating its value in healthcare, public safety, and medical diagnostics. PMF Research has played a pivotal role as a partner in three key European projects:

1. AGE-SENSEAI: the future of elderly health monitoring

The Age-SenseAI project aims to develop an innovative ecosystem of environmental sensors designed for elderly individuals living in shared residential spaces. Its goal is to monitor comfort and daily activities while enabling:

To address challenges related to sensor costs and the complexity of measuring activities in multi-resident environments, Age-SenseAI integrates a network of ambient sensors with mobile robotic systems. The collected data is analyzed using Data Fusion (DF) techniques and AI algorithms, allowing the system to distinguish between different users’ activities and comfort levels. Additionally, AI optimizes sensor deployment, reducing hardware and installation costs.

PMF Research is responsible for designing the cloud platform that will host data and integrate AI algorithms. The company will lead WP3, focusing on data representation and visualization, and will manage WP5 in collaboration with UNIVPM, overseeing market evaluation and impact monitoring.

2. SECESTA ViaSAFE: preventing risks from volcanic ash

The SECESTA ViaSAFE project involves developing an intelligent digital platform that processes real-time data from a multi-sensor system to monitor volcanic ash dispersion. By integrating sensor-based measurements with additional data processing technologies, the project aims to:

PMF Research has played a key role in defining the hardware/software communication interfaces, ensuring seamless integration between different system components. Additionally, PMF has contributed to the development of the communication protocol, optimizing data transmission efficiency and reliability.

3. PKU Smart Sensor: real-time monitoring of phenylalanine levels

The PKU Smart Sensor project aims to develop and validate a portable Point-of-Care (PoC) system for real-time home monitoring of phenylalanine levels in patients with hyperphenylalaninemia. The project’s main objectives include:

The system consists of a disposable biosensor, an ICT infrastructure with mobile applications for Android and iOS, a server for data storage, and a web-based interface for consultation.

Within this project, PMF Research has developed a user-friendly interface for managing and visualizing PoC device results while also overseeing server operations for long-term data storage.
